Five engine codes, two gearbox architectures: what intensive urban use of the A1 1.4 TFSI reveals when it comes to replacement

As a compact city car used daily in urban conditions, the A1 accumulates frequent cold starts, repeated gear changes and, depending on the version, heavy demands on the dual-clutch in stop-start traffic. On a 1.4 TFSI produced between 2010 and 2018, this results in different wear patterns depending on whether the gearbox is a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7. These two families share neither the same kinematics nor the same weak points, and they are not interchangeable between versions.

Five engine codes to identify before placing any order

The A1 1.4 TFSI comes in five engine codes: CAXA, CAVG, CTHG, CZCA and CZEA. Each corresponds to a specific configuration in terms of power output and model year, and not all of them take the same gearbox. A CAXA code will not necessarily call for the same transmission as a CZEA, even if the stated engine capacity is identical. Checking the engine code stamped on the block — not just the commercial designation — is an absolute prerequisite for identifying the compatible gearbox.

DSG 7: supplied with a new dual-clutch, without mechatronic unit

On versions fitted with the DSG 7, the gearbox is supplied with a new dual-clutch, but without the mechatronic unit. The original electrohydraulic unit, if it is in working order, is retained and reused. For 6-speed manual gearboxes, identification likewise depends on the engine code and year of production: several references coexist across the 2010–2018 period. Two reconditioning methods are available depending on the condition of the customer's original unit.
