Five engine codes for the 1.4 TFSI A1: a versatile city car, two incompatible gearboxes

The A1 is used primarily in urban and suburban environments, with frequent stops, repeated clutch engagement and, on dual-clutch versions, low-speed demands that represent the main source of wear. This pattern of use plays out differently depending on whether the vehicle is fitted with a 6-speed manual or an S tronic 7: both configurations cover the same model years (2010 to 2018) but share no components or assembly.

Five engine codes, two gearbox families: correct identification is essential

The A1 1.4 TFSI comes in five distinct engine codes — CAXA, CAVG, CTHG, CZCA and CZEA — and not all of them take the same gearbox. The engine code, found on the engine block identification plate, is the only reliable way to pinpoint the exact reference: two A1 1.4 TFSI vehicles from the same year can be fitted with entirely unrelated transmissions. The S tronic 7, a dry dual-clutch gearbox, is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual clutch included; the 6-speed manual follows its own separate range of references.

Exchange or reconditioning of your own gearbox

Two options are available within this range. The exchange basis involves sending out a reconditioned unit and the return of the old unit. Reconditioning of your own gearbox means entrusting the unit removed from your vehicle so that it can be fully restored and returned to you — this option is particularly relevant when the gearbox has a specific serial number or configuration that you would prefer to retain.
