Pajero diesel: why doesn't the same 3.2 DI-D get the same turbo across all power outputs?

This is the most common pitfall with the Pajero: the 4M41 is fitted to all three variants of the 3.2 DI-D, yet the turbos differ depending on whether the engine produces 160, 165 or 170 hp. The manufacturer references are not the same — for instance, 49135-03412 cannot be substituted for 49135-03130 or for 49135-03200. Using engine capacity alone as a selection criterion will consistently lead to the wrong reference. You must cross-check the engine code against the exact power output shown on the V5C or the manufacturer's plate.

2.5 TD and 2.8 TD: two engine families, two replacement logics

The 2.5 TD (codes 4D56 and 4D56T) and the 2.8 TD (code 4M40) are two entirely distinct architectures with no turbo interchangeability whatsoever. On the 2.5 TD, the references cover a wide range — including 49177-01501, 49177-01514 and several MD/MR references — reflecting how the model evolved over a long production run. On the 2.8 TD, the available range includes both new and reconditioned turbos (references 49377-03203, ME194xxx series), which is not the case for the other Pajero engines, available in new turbo only. The reconditioned turbo is sold on an exchange basis; the new turbo is sold with no unit to return.

Failure causes you must not overlook before replacement

The Pajero is frequently used in demanding conditions — towing, off-road tracks, long distances — all of which place considerable strain on turbo lubrication. Degraded oil, an overdue service interval, or a blocked EGR/DPF circuit are the most well-documented causes of premature failure on these engines. Typical symptoms include an abnormal whistling noise, blue or black exhaust smoke, and a loss of power under load. Fitting a replacement turbo without identifying and rectifying the root cause will lead to another failure. On variable-geometry units — particularly the 4M41 — actuator fouling is a recurring cause that should always be checked.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Mitsubishi Pajero Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Mitsubishi Pajero Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
