SEAT Gearboxes and Engines: Two Generations, Two Distinct Sets of Weaknesses – Before and After 2012

On SEAT models produced between 1998 and 2012, the 5-speed manual gearboxes fitted to the 1.9 TDI (engine codes BMN among others) suffer from synchromesh wear on the upper gears, often made worse by the heavy urban use typical of the Ibiza and Cordoba. From 2012 onwards, it is the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG — widely fitted to the 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI and 1.0 TSI in both the Leon and the Altea — that generates the most returns: juddering at low speed, harsh gear changes and a failing mechatronic unit. This technical turning point directly determines which replacement part is required.

Leon and Ibiza: Identifying the Exact Engine-Gearbox Combination

The Leon accounts for the majority of available references, followed by the Ibiza and the Altea. Across these models, the same engine capacity can correspond to incompatible gearboxes depending on the engine code: a 1.6 TDI with engine code CAYC does not take the same transmission as a 1.6 TDI with engine code CDLA or CULC. Likewise, the 2.0 TSI with engine code CCZB (Leon Cupra) takes a 6-speed DSG, which is distinct from the 7-speed DSG units fitted to entry-level engines. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier — more so than the year or the power output.

Gearboxes and Engines: What This Collection Covers

The SEAT collection brings together gearboxes (5- and 6-speed manuals, 6-speed DSG, 7-speed DSG) and bare engines, covering engine codes from AMF à to DFHA, spanning model years from 1998 to 2024. The 7-speed DSG units are supplied without the mechatronic unit but include a new dual-clutch assembly. Engines are supplied as bare units.
