Toyota diesel turbos rarely fail in isolation: the root cause is almost always elsewhere

On Toyota D-4D and D-CAT engines, the turbo is rarely the first component to fail. What brings it down is everything around it: engine oil left in service too long, a clogged diesel particulate filter raising back-pressure, or a head gasket leaking combustion gases and compromising CHRA lubrication. On the 1KD-FTV (3.0 D-4D, widely fitted to the Hilux and Land Cruiser), deterioration of the turbo oil feed line is a well-documented weak point: carbonised deposits eventually starve the bearings of adequate oil flow. On the 2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV (2.2 D-4D and 2.2 D-CAT, Avensis, Auris, RAV4, Verso), the variable geometry is prone to fouling that jams the vanes, causing persistent black smoke, a loss of boost pressure and erratic low-rev engine behaviour. Before replacing the turbo, the root cause must be identified and rectified — otherwise the new or reconditioned unit will suffer exactly the same fate.

Engine codes that make all the difference to identification

The Toyota catalogue presents a genuine challenge: several engines share the same D-4D commercial designation yet are fitted with different turbos depending on the exact engine code. The 2.5 D-4D is available in 102 hp, 120 hp and 144 hp versions on the Hilux and Land Cruiser, each with different manufacturer references (VB31, VB40, VB42, series 172010L07x or 1720147011). The 2.2 D-4D comes in 136 hp, 150 hp and 177 hp variants, and the 177 hp D-CAT variant (2AD-FHV) does not use the same turbo as the 2AD-FTV of the same quoted output. On the Aygo, C-HR and certain Yaris models, the 1.2 Turbo petrol engine (8NR-FTS) follows an entirely different logic from the diesel units. The manufacturer reference stamped on the turbo — or cross-referenced equivalents (e.g. 801891-5003S, 17201-27030A, series 9B0xx) — remains the only reliable starting point for confirming compatibility.

    Overview of models covered

The range covers the full Toyota turbocharged vehicle parc: Hilux and Land Cruiser account for the greatest number of references (9 each), followed by Corolla, Hiace, Avensis, Auris, RAV4 and more recent models such as the C-HR and Proace. Turbos available are either new or reconditioned depending on the reference, with the sales method (outright sale or exchange) indicated on each product page. The 4.5 D V8 (1VD-FTV) in the Land Cruiser and the 4.0 V6 petrol (1GR-FE) cover the most demanding towing and load applications, where turbo thermal stress is particularly high.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Toyota.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Toyota?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
