Pajero diesel: why can the same 3.2 DI-D take three different turbos?

This is the classic pitfall with the Pajero: the 3.2 DI-D comes in three power outputs — 160, 165 and 170 hp — which do not all share the same turbo reference. The codes 49135-03412, 49135-02921 and 49135-03130 each correspond to distinct specifications on the 4M41 block. The same logic applies to the older blocks: the 4D56 of the 2.5 TD and the 4M40 of the 2.8 TD together generate around ten cross-references (including 49177-01501, 49177-01514, 49377-03203), sometimes for model years that are very close together. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable identifier; engine capacity alone is not enough.

2.5 TD and 2.8 TD: two blocks, two distinct turbo families

The 4D56 / 4D56T (2.5 TD) and the 4M40 (2.8 TD) are fitted to the Pajero generations III and IV. These fixed-geometry turbos with wastegate are prone to failures caused by oil circuit contamination — carbon build-up in the CHRA feed pipe, bearing wear from insufficient lubrication after a cold start without warm-up. Typical symptoms include a sharp whistling noise under acceleration, blue-grey exhaust smoke and a noticeable loss of power. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and address the root cause (oil quality, blocked feed pipe, turbo gasket on the intake side) to prevent a rapid recurrence.

3.2 DI-D: variable geometry and multiple references on the 4M41

The 4M41 of the 3.2 DI-D uses a variable-geometry turbo whose actuator controls the vanes according to load. Contamination of the EGR circuit or the diesel particulate filter degrades intake air quality and accelerates wear on the vanes and bearings. Entering limp mode with power restriction is often the first warning sign. Several manufacturer references coexist for this block depending on the power output: ME201593, ME201677, ME202578 for the 160/165/170 hp variant, 49135-03200 and ME202446 for other variants. For the 2.8 TD only, EDEN BOITES also offers a reconditioned turbo option in addition to the new turbo available across the full engine range.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Mitsubishi Pajero Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Mitsubishi Pajero Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.

    Engine codes covered: 4M41, 4D56, 4M40, 4D56, 4D56T
