On a turbocharged petrol engine such as the 2.0 T-GDI, the leading cause of premature failure is inadequate lubrication: poor-quality oil, missed oil changes, or a clogged oil filter can starve the turbo of proper lubrication and destroy its bearings. Before fitting the new turbo, always check the oil circuit (hoses, feed and return lines), the condition of the air filter, and the integrity of the hoses connecting the turbo to the intercooler — any air leak can distort boost pressure. On start-up, prime the turbo with oil before the first engine start to ensure immediate bearing lubrication and prevent any dry running. Avoiding sudden high-rev use from cold and abrupt engine cut-off after hard driving will also help extend the life of the turbo.
