10 Jeep engine codes, from EBV to PowerTech 4.0: why they determine everything about identification

Across the Jeep range covered here — Wrangler, Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Patriot, between 2001 and 2018 — the engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point before ordering any gearbox or bare engine. The same model can be fitted with very different engines depending on the year and market: the 2.8 CRD (engine code ENR or ENS) and the 2.2 CRD (engine code BYL) share neither the same gearbox nor the same references. On the petrol side, the 4.0 PowerTech (AMC 242) and the 2.5 (AMC 150, VIN P) are two entirely separate engine families, fitted to the Wrangler across different generations. Engine code ECE and EBV relate to specific diesel variants of the Cherokee and Compass respectively. Mixing up these codes means ordering an incompatible part.

The Wrangler at the centre, transfer cases and manual gearboxes around it

The Wrangler alone accounts for the majority of available parts, with 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes depending on the generation and engine. It is also the only model in the range for which a reconditioned transfer case is available — a critical component on an off-road vehicle, prone to wear on the torque-distribution pinions and to casing leaks. Manual gearboxes on the diesel Wrangler (2.8 CRD) have well-documented wear points on the 2nd and 3rd gear synchronisers, particularly on vehicles used in mixed urban/off-road conditions.

Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Patriot: European diesel engines and code-based identification

For these four models, the engines are predominantly diesel — 2.0 CRD (code 55260384), 2.2 CRD, 1.6 Multijet — with 6-speed manual gearboxes. The 1.6 Multijet fitted to the Renegade and Compass uses a specific gearbox that is not shared with the 2.0 versions. The bare engine available in the catalogue relates to a specific block: checking the engine code is essential before taking any further steps. The two sales options available — exchange and rebuild of the original unit — apply depending on the references available for each model.
