Why does the Subaru Forester XT turbo fail?

On the Subaru Forester fitted with the turbocharged petrol engine EJ255, turbo failures most commonly stem from insufficient lubrication – caused by poor-quality engine oil, missed oil changes, or a clogged oil filter. The EJ255 boxer engine places considerable demand on its turbocharger during hard acceleration, which accelerates bearing wear whenever the oil is degraded. A blocked air filter or a dirty intercooler can also disrupt boost pressure and speed up wear on internal components. Driving habits such as pushing the engine hard immediately from cold without a warm-up phase, or switching the engine off abruptly after sustained high-load use, will also weaken the turbo over time.
