On the Doblo, the gearbox depends on the engine code as much as the engine capacity

This is the classic pitfall with this model: two Doblos showing the same engine capacity can carry completely different gearboxes depending on their engine code and model year. Engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct part — the code stamped on the engine is essential.

The Doblo spans two generations (2001–2021) and eight distinct engine variants, both diesel and petrol. On the diesel side, the 1.3 Multijet (codes 199A3.000, 263A1.000, 263A2.000, 263A3.000) always comes with a 5-speed manual, whilst the 1.6 Multijet (codes 263A2.000 and 263A3.000 depending on power output) can be fitted with either a 6-speed manual or the Comfort-Matic — an electro-hydraulic automated manual gearbox sold without its actuator. The 1.9 JTD (codes 223A5.000, 223A7.000, 223A9.000, 223B1.000, 223B2.000) and the 2.0 Multijet each have their own dedicated gearbox, either a 5-speed or 6-speed manual depending on the variant.

Petrol: 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 — three distinct gearbox families

The 1.2 and the 1.6 (code 182B6000, 16V version ~103 hp, Doblo I) both use a 5-speed manual, but the ratios and casings differ: these gearboxes are not interchangeable. The 1.4 (codes 843A1.000 and 350A1.000) is the only engine available with either a 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox depending on the year and version — the Natural Power GNV variant (code 198A4000) is paired with the 6-speed manual.

Key points for correct identification

The 1.9 JTD is known for its varying torque outputs depending on power rating (100, 105, 110 hp): the associated gearboxes have internal differences that engine capacity alone does not reveal. On Doblo van versions and Maxi variants, the axle ratio may also differ from the short-wheelbase passenger version. Before placing any order, always note down the full engine code (alphanumeric format, e.g. 223B2.000) and not just the commercial designation Multijet or JTD.
