On Comfort-Matic models, sourcing a reconditioned exchange gearbox can be difficult depending on the exact generation. If you have a complete unit that is mechanically sound but failing at one specific point, rebuilding your own unit — where it is returned to you after reconditioning — may be more appropriate than an exchange, particularly to preserve the original pairing with the on-board control units. For the 6-speed manual, exchange is generally the most straightforward route, as the casings and shafts are more standardised on this engine.

Key points to watch on this engine

The Comfort-Matic is a gearbox sold without its automated actuator: only the mechanical assembly is supplied. Before placing any order, make sure your diagnostic clearly distinguishes an internal mechanical fault from an actuator problem — otherwise you risk replacing the wrong part. On the manual, the most common symptoms on this unit (difficult gear changes in 3rd and 5th, axle leaks) should point towards a full gearbox inspection rather than a partial repair.
