Three engine codes, one gearbox: why the Doblo 1.9 JTD wears out its synchromesh rings ahead of time

On the Doblo 1.9 JTD (2001–2010), the 5-speed manual gearbox is shared across three engine codes — 223A7.000, 223B1.000 and 223B2.000 — but this commonality does not mean the transmission is without its weaknesses. The well-known fault with this gearbox is premature synchromesh wear, particularly on 2nd and 3rd gear, which first shows up as rough or refused gear changes when cold before becoming a permanent problem. On a van used under load or in urban conditions, deterioration accelerates noticeably.

Once the symptoms appear, a full gearbox recondition is generally unavoidable: simply replacing the synchromesh rings in isolation, without overhauling the whole unit, frequently leads to a rapid recurrence. Identifying the correct reference depends on the engine code stamped on the block, as the three variants of the 1.9 JTD may require different references despite the gearbox appearing identical.
