Which Ford part matches my engine or gearbox, and why is the engine code so important?

The answer comes down to two points: across the Ford range, the same model and the same engine capacity can cover several mutually incompatible engine codes, and it is that code — stamped on the block or the gearbox — that determines the exact part required, not the commercial name. This section covers more than twenty-five referenced engine codes, spanning model years 1995 to 2025, across eighteen distinct models, with the majority of references on the Transit, Focus, C-Max and Fiesta.

Engines and gearboxes: highly varied families depending on the model

Engines make up the largest share of the Ford collection, ahead of gearboxes. On the diesel side, TDCi blocks are available in 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 3.2 and 2.0 EcoBlue variants depending on the generation and application: the 2.2 TDCi is fitted extensively to the Transit (heavy commercial vehicle, intensive use), whilst the 1.0 EcoBoost and the 1.5 EcoBoost cover the Focus, Fiesta, C-Max and EcoSport in petrol form. The 3.2 TDCi is specific to the Ranger. On the gearbox side, 5-speed manual versions — including the IB5, an intermediate-shaft gearbox specific to smaller-capacity engines — coexist with 6-speed manuals on more recent or more powerful units. These families are not interchangeable: a 6-speed gearbox from a Transit 2.2 TDCi has nothing in common with one from a Focus 1.6 TDCi.

Common identification pitfalls across the Ford range

The Transit is a perfect illustration of Ford's complexity: within the same generation, several engine codes coexist (e.g. DRFA, DRFB, DRFC, DRFD, DRFE on the 2.2 TDCi) depending on power output, emissions standard and year of manufacture. Mixing up these codes invariably leads to mechanical incompatibility. On the Focus and C-Max, codes M1DA and M2DA (1.0 EcoBoost) or TXWA and QXWA (1.5 TDCi) distinguish variants with different power outputs or emissions ratings.
