Fabia 1.2 naturally aspirated or 1.2 TSI: two engine code families that share no parts

On the Skoda Fabia, the 1.2 covers two very different mechanical realities depending on the generation. The naturally aspirated 1.2 (AZQ, BME, BNM, BNV) was fitted to the early Fabia from around 2001 to 2008: a three-cylinder engine with chain or belt drive depending on the exact code, no turbo, producing 54 or 64 hp. The 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC, CGPA, CGPB, CJZC, CJZD) appeared from 2010 on the facelifted Fabia II and then the Fabia III (up to 2021): a turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection, producing 85 or 90 hp depending on the variant. These two families are architecturally incompatible; the engine code stamped on the block is the only reference that guarantees an exact match between the vehicle and the part.

Reading the engine code to avoid ordering errors

For the naturally aspirated 1.2, AZQ and BME share the same 47 kW base but differ in their fuel delivery system; BNM and BNV correspond to the 64 hp version. For the 1.2 TSI, CBZA, CBZB and CBZC refer to the early series (2010–2015), whilst CGPA, CGPB, CJZC and CJZD cover later developments featuring notable internal modifications to the cylinder head and crankshaft. Confusing TSI sub-variants can result in receiving a mechanically incompatible block, even if the engine capacity and stated power output appear identical.

Key points to watch with these blocks

The 1.2 TSI of this generation is known for premature timing chain wear and oil consumption issues related to the piston rings, particularly on codes CBZA and CBZB. These symptoms — rattling on cold starts and rapidly dropping oil levels — often indicate an internal failure that warrants replacing the block rather than carrying out a partial repair. The naturally aspirated 1.2, being a more straightforward unit, tends to suffer from cylinder head failures caused by overheating. In both cases, the engines are available as bare engines.
