37 engine codes on the Octavia from 1996 to 2020: seven engine families not to be confused

On the Octavia, the engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point before placing any order. Seven engine capacities are covered here — 1.2 TSI, 1.6, 1.6 TDI, 1.8 T 20V, 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI — and each groups together distinct codes corresponding to different blocks, sometimes from generations separated by several years. A 2.0 TDI registered in 2005 carries a BMM; the same commercial designation in 2012 may show a CBDA, CBDB, CEGA, CFHB, CFJA, CUNA or CUPA. Engine capacity alone tells you nothing precise.

Diesel: engine code families that do not overlap

The 1.9 TDI covers the earliest period with five codes — AVQ, BRU, BSU, BSW, BXJ — all distinct from the 1.6 TDI that succeeded it, with six codes (CLHA, CRKB, DBKA, DCXA, DDYA, DDYB) spread across 2009 to 2020. These two diesel families share no common block despite their similar engine capacity. The 1.9 TDI is known for premature wear of the oil pump and piston rings — topics covered in detail on its dedicated page. The 2.0 TDI groups together eight codes ranging from BMM through to the latest-generation CUNA and CUPA codes.

Petrol: three families — codes that may look similar but are not interchangeable

The 1.8 T 20V (AJQ, APP, AQA, AUM, AUQ) is the oldest petrol engine in this guide, present from 1996. The 2.0 TSI succeeded it with six codes split across two clearly distinct generations: AXX and BPY on one side, CAWB, CCZA, CHHA and CHHB on the other. The more recent 1.2 TSI comes in four codes — CJZA, CJZB, CYVA, CYVD — while the naturally aspirated 1.6 is limited to three codes (BGU, BSE, BSF). For each of these engine families, the engine is supplied as a bare engine: ancillary components are not included.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a engine for this Skoda model in stock?

We currently list 37 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Skoda?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right engine for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old engine (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the engine for my Skoda?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
