The 1.9 TDI in the Octavia is poorly suited to the ageing of its oil pump and piston rings

On this engine, the symptoms that precede failure are well documented: progressive oil consumption, blue smoke on start-up, and loss of compression due to piston ring wear. The oil pump — a well-known weak point of the PD (pump-injector) family — can drop to insufficient pressure without clear warning, accelerating wear on the crankshaft bearings. The result: an engine that suffers internal failure before the driver has identified the cause.

Five engine codes cover this engine between 1997 and 2010: : AVQ, BXJ, BSW, BSU and BRU. Despite an identical engine capacity, these blocks are not all interchangeable: power output, injection system and internal architecture vary from one code to another. Only the engine code stamped on the block allows the correct bare engine to be selected.
