Eight engine codes for the 1.9 TDI Octavia: 5-speed manual or 6-speed DSG — two families with nothing in common

On the Octavia 1.9 TDI, engine capacity tells you nothing about the gearbox fitted. Eight engine codes coexist — AGR, ALH, ASV, ATD, AXR, BKC, BXE, BLS — and they do not all share the same transmission. Some are paired with a 5-speed manual, others with the DSG 6; two vehicles with identical power output and engine capacity can therefore be fitted with structurally different gearboxes that share no compatibility whatsoever. Identifying the engine code is the first step, but it is not enough: you must also cross-reference the gearbox code itself, which is visible on the transmission identification plate.

5-speed manual and DSG 6: two architectures, two failure patterns

The 5-speed manual on the 1.9 TDI shows typical wear on the 3rd and 4th gear synchronisers, often caused by a clutch left slipping for too long. The DSG 6, a wet dual-clutch gearbox, is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual clutch included: the mechatronic unit is a separate electrohydraulic component that is frequently responsible for DSG failures and must be diagnosed independently before any order is placed. Mixing up the two families when searching for a part is the most common source of error on this engine.
