Reconditioned Skoda Rapid Gearbox

Rapid 1.2 TSI or 1.0 TSI: two petrol engines, but the same 6-speed manual gearbox sharing the same weaknesses

On the Rapid produced between 2015 and 2019, field reports consistently point to the same issue: the 6-speed manual gearbox suffers primarily from worn synchronisers — particularly on the lower gears — rather than from general wear to the casing or shafts. The typical symptoms are stiff or noisy gear changes when cold, baulking in 1st or 2nd, and sometimes difficulty engaging reverse. This type of progressive wear is often made worse by repeated stop-start urban driving, which is common on a compact model like the Rapid.

1.2 TSI and 1.0 TSI: two engine code families not to be confused

The 1.2 TSI comes with engine codes CBZB and CJZC, whilst the 1.0 TSI covers codes CHZC and CHZL. These four codes are not interchangeable between the two engine families: the associated gearbox varies depending on the code, even though both engines receive a 6-speed manual. Identifying your engine code precisely — stamped on the block and also visible in the vehicle's documents — is the essential first step before placing any order, as confusing the 1.2 TSI with the 1.0 TSI can lead to an incompatible reference despite a similar appearance.

What this means in practice for replacement

When synchroniser wear reaches the point where gear changes become unpredictable or internal noises persist with the engine running, a full gearbox replacement is generally preferred over a partial repair. The references available on this page cover codes CBZB, CJZC, CHZC and CHZL for the 2015–2019 period. The sale method offered is exchange.
