Fabia petrol or diesel: the same engine code can mean a 5-speed gearbox or a DSG 7

On the Skoda Fabia, it is the engine code stamped on the block that determines the associated gearbox — not the engine capacity, not the quoted power output. The 1.4 TSI is fitted exclusively with a DSG 7 (codes CAVE, CTHE), whilst all other engines in this guide — petrol and diesel alike — are paired with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes. This distinction is fundamental: the DSG 7 and the manual share no common parts whatsoever.

Petrol codes: from the 1.2 naturally aspirated to the 1.0 TSI, several distinct gearbox families

The 1.2 naturally aspirated covers the period 1999–2014 with five different codes (BMD, BME, BBM, CGPA, CGPB) — each corresponds to a specific gearbox reference that is not interchangeable with the others, even where the power output is identical. The 1.2 TSI (codes CBZA, CBZB) takes a 5-speed manual that is distinct from the one fitted to the 1.2 naturally aspirated. The 1.0 TSI (codes CHZC, DKRC, DKRF) is the only petrol engine in this guide that can take either a 5- or 6-speed manual depending on the variant and year — checking the engine code is therefore essential before placing any order. The 1.6 petrol (code BTS) is limited to a 5-speed manual.

Diesel codes: 1.4 TDI, 1.6 TDI and 1.9 TDI — three families with nothing in common

The 1.9 TDI (codes ATD, ASZ) is the only diesel in this guide available with either a 5- or 6-speed manual — the ASZ 130 hp variant receives the 6-speed. The 1.4 TDI (codes AMF, BNM, BNV, BMS) and the 1.6 TDI (codes CAYA, CAYB, CAYC) each use a 5-speed manual specific to their own family. A 1.4 TDI and a 1.6 TDI do not share the same gearbox despite sometimes similar power outputs: the engine code remains the only reliable means of identification.
