From 1999 to 2014, the Fabia 1.2 petrol was fitted with just one transmission family: the 5-speed manual. However, this apparent continuity conceals real differences between the gearboxes paired with engine codes BMD, BME and BBM (first and second generation) and those fitted to the CGPA and CGPB units (third generation). References LVG, LVC, LUK, LNR, JUS, JUR, JPU, JJL, JHN and JHM are not interchangeable between generations: the exact reference stamped on the gearbox casing is the only reliable way to identify the correct part.

When rebuilding the customer's own gearbox makes sense

On the oldest versions or references that have become hard to source, finding a replacement in stock can be difficult. In such cases, rebuilding the customer's original gearbox — where the unit is reconditioned and then returned to its owner — is a practical alternative to the standard exchange. This approach is particularly suited when the reference is specific to a short production run, or when the customer wishes to keep their own unit. Gearboxes from the BMD and BBM engine codes, which are not widely found, are typically a case in point.

Key points to watch with this engine

The naturally aspirated 1.2 found in the earliest Fabia models is a lightweight engine, but its gearbox is subjected to increased stress in heavy urban use, particularly on the 1st and 2nd gear synchronisers. The CGPA and CGPB engine codes, introduced on the Fabia III, use a gearbox with a different final drive ratio: buying the wrong one results in a direct mechanical incompatibility. Checking the engine code before placing any order is essential.
