The Superb racks up high mileages – and the gearbox pays the price before the engine does

Whether used as a company car, a long-distance shuttle or a taxi, the Skoda Superb regularly clocks 200,000 to 300,000 km under demanding conditions. It is precisely this intensive use that puts the transmission under far greater strain than on a typical private vehicle. Progressive slipping, vibration under load, bearing noise or deteriorating gear changes: on the Superb, these symptoms tend to appear well before any sign of engine weakness.

2.0 TDI: three gearbox families for one engine, depending on the code and generation

The 2.0 TDI accounts for the bulk of the fleet, with engine codes as varied as BKP, CBBB, CFFB, CFGB, CLJA, CRLB or DFHA, covering generations from 2008 to 2024. Depending on the exact code and year of first registration, this engine can be paired with a 6-speed manual, a DSG 6 or a DSG 7 — three distinct gearboxes that are not interchangeable. The DSG 6 (wet clutch) is fitted to the older and more powerful versions; the DSG 7 (dry clutch, 7-speed) takes over on later generations. The DSG 7 is known for juddering at low speeds and premature dual-clutch wear in heavy urban use: this is the primary failure point to check before placing any order. DSG gearboxes are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual clutch included.

1.4 TSI, 1.6 TDI and 1.8 TSI: less common transmissions, but engine codes not to be overlooked

The 1.4 TSI (codes CAXC, CZCA) is fitted exclusively with a 6-speed manual. The 1.6 TDI (code CAYC or CLHA) is paired with a DSG 7. The 1.8 TSI (code BZB or CDAA) is also coupled to a DSG 7. For these less common engine variants, the engine code stamped on the cylinder head remains the only reliable way to confirm exact compatibility with the relevant gearbox reference — engine capacity alone is not sufficient.
