On the Octavia 1.9 TDI, the engine code stamped on the block takes precedence over the quoted power output

Two Octavia 1.9 TDI models showing the same power output can carry completely different turbos: it is the engine code that determines the exact reference, not the horsepower figure. With eleven distinct codes spread across five power levels — AGR, ALH, AHF, ASV, ATD, AUY, ASZ, BJB, BKC, BLS, BXE — and manufacturer references that do not systematically cross over between families, identification must start from the code stamped on the block before any order is placed.

Five power levels, non-interchangeable turbos

The 90 hp (AGR, ALH) and the 110 hp (AHF, ASV) belong to the fixed-geometry wastegate generation. The 130 hp (ASZ) moves to variable geometry. The 105 hp (BJB, BKC, BLS, BXE) correspond to a later generation with its own references. The engine listed as 100/110 hp covers codes AHF, ASV, ATD, AUY: ATD and AUY are variants within the same family, but their turbos are not systematically interchangeable with AHF or ASV. All turbos offered here are new, sold as a straightforward purchase, with no old unit to return.

Causes of failure to address before replacement

On these engines, turbo failure is most commonly caused by degraded lubrication — aged oil or a blocked oil circuit — or by intake line fouling brought on by a clogged diesel particulate filter. Characteristic symptoms include: whistling under load, blue-grey smoke on acceleration, and a marked loss of power. Fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause (oil quality, intake sealing, EGR fouling) risks premature failure of the replacement unit. Check the condition of the bearings and the CHRA shaft before concluding that the turbo alone is at fault.
