Seven engine codes for the same 2.0 TDI Octavia: three incompatible gearbox families

Between 2004 and 2020, the Octavia's 2.0 TDI spans seven distinct engine codes — BKD, BMM, CEGA, CFHC, CLCB, CRLB and CUNA — and not all of them take the same gearbox. A first-generation BKD does not accept the same transmission as a late-series CUNA, even when the engine capacity and quoted power output are similar. Going by engine capacity alone will consistently lead to an incorrect order.

6-Speed Manual, DSG 6 or DSG 7: what the engine code determines

Three families exist within this range: the 6-speed manual, the DSG 6 and the DSG 7. The DSG 6 (DQ250) is a wet-clutch gearbox, more robust under high torque loads, and was fitted to the earlier TDI generations. The DSG 7 (DQ200) is a dry-clutch unit and was used on more recent, lower-torque versions. These two architectures share no common parts and their gearbox casings are physically different. The 6-speed manual is an entirely separate third family.

DSG: what is included in the reconditioned unit

The DSG gearboxes in this catalogue are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch fitted. The mechatronic unit — the hydraulic control module integrated into the gearbox — is a fully independent electronic component, and its reconditioning falls under a separate process. Checking the condition of the mechatronic unit before any work is carried out is essential, as a mechanically sound DSG can still exhibit gear-change faults attributable solely to this component.
