Seven engine codes, three gearbox families: the 2.0 TDI Octavia from 2004 to 2020 leaves no room for guesswork

On the 2.0 TDI Octavia, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct transmission. Seven engine codes — BKD, BMM, CEGA, CFHC, CLCB, CRLB, CUNA — are spread across a 6-speed manual, a DSG 6 and a DSG 7: two vehicles both badged "2.0 TDI" and registered in the same year can carry gearboxes with no parts in common whatsoever. It is the engine code stamped on the block — not the identification plate — that gives the definitive answer.

Three transmissions with distinct mechanical architectures

The 6-speed manual is the most common transmission on the earlier generations (codes BKD and BMM). The more recent codes moved to dual-clutch gearboxes: the DSG 6 (DQ250) and the DSG 7 (DQ500) have different architectures — gearbox oil, mechatronic unit, dual clutch — and are not interchangeable with one another. The DSG gearboxes offered here are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual clutch: this is a structural point that determines how the unit is refitted.

Check the engine code before placing any order

The codes CEGA, CFHC, CLCB, CRLB and CUNA cover the Octavia III and IV (from around 2013 onwards) and sometimes appear in parts databases under identical generic descriptions. Confusing a DSG 6 with a DSG 7 on these codes results in an immediate incompatibility. The engine code is read directly from the block, on the gearbox side, and remains the only reliable reference for identifying the original transmission.
