From 169A1.000 to codes 312 and 330: how the 1.3 Multijet family multiplied its turbos between its earliest and latest versions

On the 1.3 Multijet, the engine code is the first piece of information to note before searching for a turbo. This guide covers codes as early as 169A1.000 and 169A5.000 — specific to the 75 hp version on the Fiat Punto — right through to codes 312 A8.000, 312 B1.000, 312 B2, 312 B5.000 or 330 A1.000 covering 75, 80, 90 and 95 hp versions on the Fiat Doblo, Fiat Tipo, Fiat Panda, Lancia Ypsilon, Lancia Musa and Alfa Romeo MiTo, among others. Between these two extremes, intermediate codes such as 188A9.000, 199A2.000, 199A3.000, 199B1.000, 199B4.000, 199B8.000 or 225A2.000 each correspond to potentially different turbo references. The power output shown on the registration document is not enough: two vehicles both listed at 75 hp may carry different codes and require different parts.

Codes shared across power outputs: the 1.3 Multijet trap

Several codes in this guide appear under entries that group multiple power outputs together — for example 75, 80, 90 and 95 hp. In such cases, the code alone is not enough to identify a single reference: the manufacturer's turbo reference and its equivalents remain the only reliable guide. Conversely, some codes such as 199 A3.000 appear only under a 90 hp entry, or 223 A9.000 exclusively under 80 and 84 hp. Codes specific to certain non-Fiat vehicles also feature in this guide: A 13 FD, A13DTC, Z13DTJ or FHY (F13DTE6), the latter associated with 75, 80 and 95 hp versions on the Fiat Fiorino and Fiat Grande Punto.

Causes of failure and key checks before replacement

On this small diesel unit, the turbo is vulnerable to insufficient lubrication during repeated cold starts, gradual build-up of deposits in the oil circuit, and back-pressure caused by a blocked diesel particulate filter. Common symptoms include blue or black exhaust smoke, a characteristic whistling sound under load, and the vehicle entering limp mode. All turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase with no old unit to return. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and rectify the root cause of the failure — oil quality, intake hose integrity, DPF condition — to prevent the same problem recurring on the new part.
