Why can the same 1.5 dCi in the Kangoo take turbos that are incompatible with one another?

The diesel Kangoo is dominated by the K9K in its many variants, and this is precisely where identification becomes critical. A Kangoo 1.5 dCi 80 hp can be fitted with a K9K 700, a K9K 702, a K9K 706, a K9K 722 or a K9K 750 depending on the generation and year of production: each is a distinct engine code, each requires a different turbo. Two vehicles showing the same power output can therefore take entirely incompatible manufacturer references. Only the engine code stamped on the block, cross-referenced against the original turbo's manufacturer reference, will confirm the correct part.

1.9 DTI and 1.5 dCi: two engine families with nothing in common turbo-wise

The 1.9 DTI 80 hp (codes F8Q or F9Q) is the engine fitted to the earliest Kangoo generations. Its turbo is in no way interchangeable with those of the 1.5 dCi, which is built around an entirely different K9K architecture. Within the 1.5 dCi itself, variants span seven distinct power outputs — 65, 68, 80, 82, 86, 90 and 103 hp — spread across several K9K code families. The 1.5 dCi 103 hp (K9K 608, K9K 628, K9K 808) takes a specific higher-flow turbo, different from the one used on the 65 to 90 hp versions.

New or reconditioned turbo: what the Kangoo guide tells you

The turbos listed here are new for the vast majority of Kangoo engines (1.9 DTI, 1.5 dCi 86/90, 1.5 dCi 103, 1.5 dCi 65/68/80). A reconditioned option is available for the 1.5 dCi 65/80/82 hp group (codes K9K 802, K9K 806): in this case, the original unit is returned after reconditioning. On the 1.5 dCi K9K, the most common causes of failure are lubrication breakdown (old oil or a blocked circuit) and fouling caused by the DPF or EGR, which leads to premature bearing wear and loss of CHRA sealing. Persistent blue smoke, whistling under load or the vehicle entering limp mode are warning signs that must not be ignored. Addressing the root cause before replacing the turbo is essential to avoid damaging the new part.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Renault Kangoo Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Renault Kangoo Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
