Clio diesel or petrol: two turbo families, a story stretching from the 1.9 DTI to the K9K

The turbocharged Clio has not followed a straightforward path. On the diesel side, it all begins with the 1.9 DTI 80 hp and its F8Q engine codes, before the platform settles firmly around the 1.5 dCi: the K9K block in its many variants (K9K 700, 702, 704, 708, 710, 714, 716, 740, 752, 760, 766, 768, 792, 800, 840…), and the F9Q block for the 106 and 109 hp variants. On the petrol side, the 1.2 TCe arrives much later with the H5F and D4F codes, and uses a turbo of an entirely different design. These two families share no references whatsoever: the same power output listed in the catalogue is not enough to identify the correct part.

K9K: why power output alone is not enough to identify the turbo

The 1.5 dCi spans variants from 64 to 109 hp depending on the Clio generation and year of first registration. The engine code stamped on the cylinder head remains the only reliable reference: a K9K 760 and a K9K 792 produce similar power outputs yet take different variable-geometry turbos, with distinct actuators and bearing sets. Renault references (14411… series, 8200… series) also vary by generation: some carry an R or R0 suffix indicating a manufacturer nomenclature revision. Only the 1.5 dCi 80/82 is available as a reconditioned turbo; all other diesel and petrol engines are covered by new turbos.

Causes of failure and precautions before replacement

On the 1.5 dCi, variable-geometry turbos are particularly susceptible to clogging of the turbine vanes caused by degraded oil or insufficient DPF regeneration. The classic symptoms — whistling, blue or black smoke, loss of power under load — can also point to a leak in the upstream air circuit. On the 1.2 TCe, failures more commonly affect the CHRA seals and bearings, often as a result of insufficient lubrication at start-up. In both cases, identifying and addressing the root cause before fitting is essential: a contaminated oil circuit or a cracked intake hose will destroy a new turbo just as quickly as it destroyed the original.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Renault Clio Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Renault Clio Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
