Before and after the downsizing era: why turbo failure affects city cars and heavy commercial vehicles alike

A Transit hauling full loads day after day, a Daily running motorway miles for hours on end, a Land Cruiser towed off-road, a Golf used in town on short runs that never get the engine up to temperature: these uses have nothing in common except one shared weak point. In every one of these cases, the turbo is subjected to thermal and mechanical stresses that a naturally aspirated engine never experiences. The widespread adoption of downsizing — smaller engines, pushed harder, running hotter — has turned turbo failure from a rare incident on a working vehicle into a common fault on family saloons, SUVs and motorhomes.

Diesel, petrol, fixed or variable geometry: very different turbo families depending on the engine

This guide covers more than thirty models, from the A4 to the Série 3, from the Transporter to the Ducato, in both diesel and petrol. Engine variants range from the 1.5 dCi to the 2.5 D-4D including the 2.0 TFSI and the 1.8 T. On variable-geometry diesel engines (many codes: OM 646, AZV, BKD, BKP, RHZ…), it is typically the gradual fouling of the vanes that precedes failure, made worse by a blocked diesel particulate filter or a faulty EGR valve. On petrol engines with a wastegate, the bearings and oil seal integrity are the first to suffer — particularly after a hot engine shutdown without allowing the revs to drop first.

The same engine can take several different turbo references depending on the year of manufacture, the power output or the market variant: engine codes BKD and BKP share the same 2.0 TDI displacement but do not use the same turbo, just as the OM 646.980, .981 and .982 variants found in the Sprinter and the Classe E differ from one another. Checking the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to identify the correct manufacturer reference, before cross-referencing with the available equivalences.

Treat the cause, not just the part

Fitting a reconditioned or new turbo without identifying the root cause of the failure is a sure way to destroy the replacement part within the first few hours. Degraded oil or insufficient oil level, a foreign body in the turbine, a blocked feed pipe: these causes will destroy the CHRA long before normal wear ever would. The most common symptoms — blue or black exhaust smoke, a characteristic whistling noise, a marked loss of power, limp-home mode — point the diagnosis in the right direction but are not enough on their own to pinpoint the cause. The range includes new turbos and reconditioned exchange turbos depending on the reference; the sales method and availability are shown on each product page.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
