25 Alfa Romeo engine codes over 13 years: why the same engine capacity can hide very different parts

Between 2005 and 2018, Alfa Romeo rolled out multiple engine families and transmission ranges across successive generations. The 147 and the 159 laid the early diesel foundations with the 1.9 JTD engines, available under several codes — 182B9000, 223A7000, 223B1000 — whose associated gearboxes are not interchangeable with one another. The Giulietta and the MiTo, which followed, introduced the 1.4 T-Jet (codes 198A4000, 199A8000), the 0.9 TwinAir (199B6000) and the 1.6 JTDm, while the 2016 Giulia brought an entirely different diesel architecture with the 2.2 JTDm referenced 55271838, bearing no mechanical relation to the older 2.2 JTS or 2.2 JTD units from previous generations. Identifying the vehicle's generation and its exact engine code is therefore the essential first step before placing any order.

Gearboxes, turbos and engines: three parts families, three distinct logics

Gearboxes make up the largest share of the Alfa Romeo catalogue available here, offered in 5- and 6-speed manual variants depending on the model and engine. Turbos form the second-largest family by volume, with parts available new. Engines, fewer in number, cover mainly older petrol units such as the 2.0 (code AR16201) and the 3.2 (AR16105) from the GTV. These engines are offered either on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the customer's own unit, depending on the case — two distinct purchasing options.

MiTo, Giulietta, 159: identification pitfalls you need to know

The MiTo and the Giulietta account for the bulk of the catalogue, yet they sometimes share similar engine codes without their gearboxes being interchangeable. On the 2.0 JTDm, for example, codes 940A4.000 and 940A5.000 correspond to different power outputs. On the 1.4, no fewer than eight distinct codes (198A4.000, 199A6.000, 199A8.000, 350A1.000, 940A2.000, 955A1.000, 955A7.000, 955B1.000) cover power and generation variants spread across several years. The code stamped on the engine block remains the only reliable starting point for finding the right reconditioned part.
