Alfa Romeo 2005 to 2018: 3 part families, and engine codes that change everything

Between 2005 and 2018, the Alfa Romeo range went through two major generational shifts: the 1.9 JTD diesel of the 147 and 159 generations, followed by the move to the 1.6 and 2.0 JTDM on the Giulietta and MiTo, alongside the introduction of the 0.9 TwinAir petrol and the 1.4 T-Jet. These generational breaks translate directly into incompatible parts at identical engine capacities — a 1.9 JTD with 101 hp (engine codes 182B9000, 223A7000, 223B1000) does not share the same gearbox or turbo as a 1.9 JTD with 120 hp (engine codes 186A9.000, 192A8.000, 937A3000). Engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct part.

Gearboxes: model and year are decisive

Gearboxes make up the largest family in this catalogue, available as 5- or 6-speed manuals depending on the engine and the period. On the MiTo and Giulietta, the same 1.4 block can correspond to very different codes (198A4.000, 199A6.000, 199A8.000, 940A2.000, 955A1.000 among others) depending on power output and year of production: mixing up codes will invariably cause a compatibility issue. On the 159, the 1.9 JTDm covers engine codes 937A3000, 937A5000, 939A2000, which correspond to distinct power outputs (120, 150 and 170 hp) and non-interchangeable gearboxes.

Turbos and engines: details you cannot afford to overlook

Turbos are the second largest family by volume, available new or reconditioned depending on the reference. The 1.3 MultiJet, fitted to the MiTo in 80, 84 and 95 hp versions, illustrates another common pitfall: three closely matched power outputs, distinct engine codes (199 B4.000, 199 B8.000, 223 A9.000 for the 80 and 84 hp versions; 199 B1.000, 330 A1.000 for the 95 hp version), and turbos that cannot be substituted from one version to another. Bare engines, which are fewer in number in this catalogue, cover notably the 2.0 petrol (engine code AR16201) and the 2.2 JTS (engine code 939A5.000). For any Alfa Romeo part, the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference.
