Alfa Romeo Gearboxes: manual, automated manual or dual-clutch – which type does your model actually have?

The vast majority of Alfa Romeo models listed here — MiTo, Giulietta, 159, GTV, 147, Giulia — are fitted with manual gearboxes, in 5 or 6 speeds depending on the model and engine. No dual-clutch (TCT) or conventional automatic gearbox features in this collection: the range covers exclusively reconditioned manual transmissions, alongside two engine references. Identifying the correct gearbox requires the engine code stamped on the block, which varies from one variant to another even where the engine capacity is the same.

Petrol or diesel: engines and gearboxes that don't cross over

On the diesel side, the JTDm family spans several engine capacities — 1.3, 1.6, 1.9, 2.0 and 2.2 — each with distinct engine codes (939A2000, 937A5000, AR16201, 55271838…) and gearboxes that are not interchangeable. The 1.9 JTDm in the 159 (code 939A2000) does not share its transmission with the 1.9 JTDm in the Giulietta, and the year of first registration can sometimes affect the reference required. On the petrol side, the 1.4 T-Jet (codes 198A4000, 955A2000, 940B7000…) and the 0.9 TwinAir (code 199B6000) are the two families represented, principally on the MiTo and Giulietta. Please note: no 1.2 petrol engine was ever fitted to the MiTo; if this code appears in any document, it is a reference error that must be corrected before placing an order.

MiTo and Giulietta account for the bulk of the catalogue

The MiTo (2008–2018) alone accounts for the majority of available gearboxes, followed by the Giulietta. The 159 and the GTV round out the collection with more specific transmissions, notably the 3.2 V6 (code 937A3000) on the GTV, whose 6-speed gearbox is unique to that family. Two sales methods are available depending on the reference: exchange or rebuild of your own unit — a distinction that affects lead times and logistics, so do check each product page. For any part, the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable means of identification, taking precedence over the model name or year.
