Alfa Romeo Gearboxes: 5- or 6-Speed Manual, Automated Manual or Dual-Clutch — Which One Does Your Model Actually Have?

On the Alfa Romeo models listed here — MiTo, Giulietta, 159, 147, Giulia and GTV, from 2005 to 2018 — the transmission is exclusively manual: 5-speed on entry-level versions and older generations, 6-speed on the majority of diesel engines and the most recent 1.4 T-Jet variants. No Selespeed automated manual gearbox or dual-clutch unit features in this catalogue: the Selespeed, fitted to certain 147 and GTV models of an earlier generation, is not covered here. This is the first identification point to check before placing any order.

Diesel JTD and JTDM: Gearbox Families That Do Not Overlap

Diesel accounts for the majority of available references. The 1.9 JTD and 1.9 JTDm (codes 192A5000, 192A8.000, 939A5.000, 939B3.000, 939B4.000) cover the 147, 159 and Giulietta depending on power output — 101, 105, 120 or 150 hp — and do not take the same gearbox from one version to another. The 2.0 JTDm (940A3000, 940A4000) in 136, 163 and 170 hp form on the Giulietta and Giulia takes a separate 6-speed gearbox. The 1.6 JTDm 105 hp (955A2.000, 955A7.000) and the 2.2 JTD (codes 223A7000, 223B1000) each have their own unit. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for matching the correct part.

Petrol T-Jet and TwinAir: Watch Out for Engine Capacity Mix-Ups

On the petrol side, the 1.4 T-Jet is available in 105, 116 and 120 hp (codes 198A3.000, 955A2.000, 199B1.000 among others) and the 1.4 Turbo MultiAir 135 hp (940A4000) takes a different gearbox despite the identical engine capacity. The 0.9 TwinAir (875 cm³, code 875A1.000 or 844A2.000) is specific to the MiTo and the Giulietta: no 1.2 petrol engine ever existed on these models — a common source of confusion when identifying the correct part. Reconditioned turbos cover mainly the JTD and JTDm diesel blocks as well as the 1.4 T-Jet, with manufacturer cross-references (Garrett, BorgWarner) listed on the product pages.
