10 engine variants, two gearbox families: what the Focus's versatile use demands of the transmission

The Ford Focus is above all a car built for intensive daily driving: urban commutes, A-roads, and the occasional motorway run. This usage pattern puts repeated and uneven demands on the gearbox — a great deal of first- and second-gear changes in town, with little respite at cruising speed. The result: synchromesh rings wear early, and casings can develop leaks beyond 150,000 km on the higher-torque variants. On the Focus, every gearbox in this catalogue is manual — 5-speed on the 1.4 TDCi and 1.8, 6-speed on all other engine variants — with no automatic or automated manual options in this range. This catalogue covers production of 2004 à 2021, spanning the Mk2, Mk2.5, Mk3 and Mk3.5 generations.

A catalogue of 29 engine codes — don't mix them up

Behind ten engine variants lie 29 distinct engine codes — and that's the first identification pitfall. The 1.0 EcoBoost comes in M1DA and M2DA variants, which share the same 6-speed gearbox but correspond to different calibrations. The 1.6 TDCi covers six codes (G8DA, G8DB, G8DC, GPDA, T1DA, T3DA), again on a 6-speed gearbox, but the casings and output shafts are not necessarily identical from one code to the next. The 2.5 Turbo (HYDA 225 hp in ST trim, JZDA for the RS and RS500) uses a reinforced 6-speed gearbox that is dimensionally different from the one fitted to the 2.0 EcoBoost, even though both have 6 speeds. The engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity alone — remains the only reliable starting point for identifying the correct gearbox.

Two reconditioning methods depending on the condition of the original unit

For this Focus catalogue, two options are available: the standard exchange, and the rebuild of the customer's own unit, which returns the vehicle's original gearbox once it has been fully reconditioned. This second option is particularly relevant for vehicles with a strong service history, or where the gearbox has a localised fault (an individual synchromesh ring, a bearing) with no widespread casing damage. On the Focus ST and RS, where the gearbox is model-specific and replacement volumes are lower, rebuilding the customer's own unit can offer a genuine sourcing advantage.
