5-speed or 6-speed gearboxes, new turbo or rebuild: what each Chevrolet dictates

Across the Chevrolet range sold between 2010 and 2018, two factors immediately guide the choice of part: the model and the engine. The Captiva and Orlando, fitted predominantly with 2.0 or 2.2 diesel engines, take 6-speed gearboxes, whereas the Aveo and Spark — with the 1.2 (B12D1) or the 1.3 VCDi (A13DTC, A13DTE) — use 5-speed gearboxes. These two families are not interchangeable: a Captiva 2.2 D gearbox will not fit an Aveo, and vice versa.

2.0 and 2.2 diesel: multiple codes for different ratios

Diesel is the dominant engine type in this range. The 2.0 VCDi is available in several power outputs (127, 131, 150 and 163 hp) paired with distinct codes — Z20D1, Z20DM, Z20DMH, Z20S, Z20S1 — corresponding to different calibrations and generations. The 2.2 D (163 and 184 hp) uses codes A22DM, A22DMH and LNQ for the Captiva, and Z22D1 and Z22DM for other applications. Before placing any order, the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable check: engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct gearbox or turbo.

Turbos and rebuilds: when each sales method has its own logic

This range offers three purchasing options: exchange, rebuild of your own unit, and sale of a new turbo. The rebuild option is suited to cases where the original part is difficult to source — certain Captiva 2.2 or Cruze references 1.4 T (B14XFL, B14XFT, B14XNT, LE2) — or where the owner wishes to have their own unit reconditioned. For turbos, new units are available across several diesel engines, simplifying procurement without relying on an exchange core. The 1.7 VCDi (A17DTE, A17DTS), found notably on the Cruze, also features in the range. For the Orlando, only one gearbox reference is listed: checking the engine code before taking any steps is all the more important on this model.
