Captiva in 6-speed or Aveo in 5-speed: two very different sourcing approaches

The Chevrolet gearboxes available here cover five models — Captiva, Aveo, Orlando, Spark and Cruze — produced between 2010 and 2018, with engine options ranging from the 1.2 petrol (B12D1) to the 2.2 VCDi (Z22D1 / Z22DM), taking in the 1.3 VCDi (A13DTC / A13DTE), 1.7 VCDi (A17DTS / A17DTE) and 1.8 petrol (F18D4) along the way. There are just two configurations: 5-speed manual and 6-speed manual. The choice between them is not a matter of preference — it is dictated by the model and engine code. A Captiva 2.2 VCDi takes a 6-speed gearbox (references CAPTIVA-CF269-6V or CAPTIVA-CG26R-5V depending on the exact variant), whereas the Aveo and Spark with 1.2 or 1.3 VCDi are fitted with 5-speed gearboxes. Mixing the two families is not possible.

Exchange or rebuild: when each option is the right choice

Both purchasing options are available depending on the reference. Exchange suits the majority of standard cases — Aveo, Orlando, Cruze — where the unit in stock is a direct match for the vehicle. Rebuilding the customer's own original unit makes the most sense for the Captiva, where certain 4x4 versions with a 6-speed gearbox are less commonly available on an exchange basis: entrusting your own gearbox guarantees a result that is precisely matched to the original specification, with no risk of electronic or mechanical conflict arising from a different service history.

Identification points to check before ordering

The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for avoiding mistakes. On the 1.3 VCDi, for example, A13DTC and A13DTE denote two distinct power variants that do not necessarily share the same gearbox. On the 1.7 VCDi, the same logic applies between A17DTS and A17DTE. The vehicle's year of manufacture further narrows the choice: between 2010 and 2018, certain engines were updated during the Captiva's production run. Checking the model, engine code and model year together avoids any return due to incompatibility.
