From 2002 to 2015, the Ibiza 1.2 city car puts its 5-speed gearbox under different stresses depending on the engine code

A city car used primarily in urban conditions is subjected to frequent gear changes, often under partial load, with repeated stops. On the Ibiza 1.2, this intensive use wears the lower-gear synchronisers before anything else. The 5-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission paired with this engine throughout the entire period, but it is not uniform: four engine codes were used between 2002 and 2015, AZQ, BME, CGPA and CGPB, and each corresponds to a distinct gearbox reference.

Why the engine code is decisive for identification

The AZQ and BME were fitted to the earlier generations (from 2002 onwards), while the CGPA and CGPB appear on the facelifted Ibiza models of the 2010s. A gearbox from an AZQ is not compatible with a CGPA, even if the engine capacity and number of speeds are identical. The engine code, stamped on the block, is therefore the only reliable starting point for selecting the correct reference from the ten gearbox codes listed in this collection — LVG, LVC, LUK, LNR, JUS, JUR, JPU, JJL, JHN or JHM, depending on the vehicle's exact specification.
