Toledo 1.9 TDI: variable geometry or wastegate – what's the difference depending on power output?

The Toledo 1.9 TDI range is exclusively diesel — no petrol engines fall within this scope. That said, a common fuel type does not mean a single turbo architecture: depending on power output and engine code, the Toledo was fitted with turbos featuring variable geometry (VNT) or wastegate. Thermal and intake regulation requirements differ considerably from one version to another, making it essential to identify the engine code before placing any order.

Engine codes and turbo families by power output

The 90 hp versions are spread across engine codes AGR and ALH, whilst the more recent 90 hp and 105 hp versions carry the codes BJB, BKC, BLS, BRU, BXE or BXF — two distinct groups that do not share the same manufacturer reference. The 110 hp versions come as AFN (earlier version) or as AHF, AJM, ASV, AUY for the 110 and 115 hp outputs. The 130 hp corresponds to engine code ASZ, and the 150 hp to engine code ARL. Each group has its own manufacturer references: mixing them up is a common mistake, particularly between AFN and AHF, which share the same engine capacity and have very similar power outputs.

Causes of failure and key checks before replacement

On variable-geometry turbos, clogging of the movable vanes by soot deposits — often made worse by a blocked diesel particulate filter or a faulty EGR valve — is the most well-documented cause of failure on these engines. Wastegate turbos are more susceptible to lubrication problems: degraded oil or too long a delay before oil pressure builds at start-up is enough to damage the bearings and seals. In both cases, addressing the root cause before replacement is essential: fitting a new turbo without correcting an inadequate oil supply or a fouled intake circuit will invariably lead to another failure. All turbos listed on this page are sold new, as a straightforward sale, with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SEAT Toledo 1.9 TDI Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SEAT Toledo 1.9 TDI Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
