28 years of Skoda mechanics covered: gearboxes and engines from 1997 to 2025

Between 1997 and 2025, the Skoda range underwent several major technical shifts. The first-generation Fabia and Octavia came with 1.9 TDI units (codes BKC, BKP) or naturally aspirated 1.6s inherited from the Volkswagen Group's A4 platform. From the mid-2000s, TSI engines and DSG gearboxes gradually became the norm — first on the Octavia and Superb, then on the Fabia and Rapid with the smaller 1.2 TSI and 1.0 TSI units (CBZA, CBZB, CJZA, DKRC, DKRF). The 2010–2020 decade saw the arrival of the 2.0 TDI in codes DGTE, DFHA and DADA on the Kodiaq, Karoq and Superb, alongside 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI units in the sportier Octavia variants. Octavia and Fabia: two models, very different parts depending on the generation

The Octavia accounts for the largest share of the catalogue, closely followed by the Fabia. The same engine designation can correspond to incompatible parts: an Octavia II 1.9 TDI takes a different gearbox from an Octavia III 1.6 TDI, and the Fabia 1.2 in code BTS (naturally aspirated) has nothing in common with a Fabia 1.2 TSI in CBZA or CJZA. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable identifier to avoid any ordering errors.

Manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7 gearboxes: key points specific to Skoda

The available gearboxes span four families: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7. DSG units are supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly but without the mechatronic unit — this is a structural point that determines compatibility with your original control unit. The more recent 2.0 TDI generation (DGTE, DFHA) is most commonly paired with a DSG 7, whilst the 1.4 TSI and 1.8 TSI are predominantly found with a DSG 6. On entry-level diesel variants such as the 1.6 TDI (CLJA, CRLB) or the 1.4 TDI, the 6-speed manual remains the dominant configuration. For engines, only the bare block is offered: ancillary components (turbo, injection system, alternator) are not included.
