Why does the Volkswagen Bora 1.9 TDI turbo fail?
On the Volkswagen Bora fitted with a 1.9 TDI engine, the turbocharger is put under considerable strain by repeated cold starts and the sustained acceleration typical of mixed town and road driving. The most common failures stem from inadequate lubrication caused by poor-quality engine oil or missed oil changes, which prematurely wear the bearings and turbine shaft. A clogged air filter or a cracked intercooler also upsets the air/oil balance within the turbo and accelerates wear. Revving the engine hard immediately after a cold start, before it has reached its normal operating temperature, remains one of the leading causes of turbo failure on these diesel engines.

Before installing the new turbo, check the oil circuit (feed and return pipes), the condition of the boost hoses and the cleanliness of the air intake to prevent any contamination of the new component.
