The DSG gearbox from the Volkswagen Group — fitted to the Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touran, Polo, Audi A3 and Q3 (badged S tronic), SEAT Leon, Skoda Octavia... — is the most widely used dual-clutch gearbox in Europe. Quick, smooth, efficient... and a headache in the workshop as it ages. At EDEN BOITES, it is the largest family in our catalogue: nearly 700 reconditioned DSG6 and DSG7 references. Here is how to tell the two generations apart, recognise their faults, and what is included in a DSG exchange.
DSG6 or DSG7: which one is fitted to your car?
The DSG6 (type DQ250, 6-speed) uses wet clutches — robust by nature, it is fitted mainly to higher-powered engines (2.0 TDI, muscular TSI units) and requires regular oil changes with the correct specific fluid. The DSG7 comes in two forms: the DQ200 with dry clutches (compact engines — this is the one that attracts the most complaints), and the DQ381/DQ500 wet-clutch units found in more recent, higher-powered applications. The quickest way to be certain is the code stamped on the gearbox — or simply your number plate.
Symptoms of a DSG gearbox on its way out
- Judder and shudder on pull-away or at low speed (typical of the DQ200);
- Clunking on gear changes;
- Slipping: revs rising without a corresponding increase in speed;
- Limp mode, gearbox warning light, odd or even gears unavailable (one of the two clutches or its actuator at fault);
- Vibration at a standstill, hesitant D/R selection.
The causes fall into three categories: clutch wear, internal mechanical wear (bearings, forks, synchros) and the electrohydraulic control system. This is why a proper diagnosis matters: depending on the verdict, the solution can range from a simple recalibration to a full replacement. For trade customers, our DSG7 DQ200 guide for garages covers real-world costs and diagnostic pitfalls in detail.
Our reconditioned DSG gearboxes: new dual-clutch kit included
Every reconditioned DSG gearbox from EDEN BOITES is supplied with a brand-new dual-clutch kit — the number-one wear component in this technology, replaced as standard rather than simply inspected. The gearbox is supplied without the mechatronic unit: your original unit is refitted at installation, ensuring full compatibility with your vehicle's ECU. Complete strip-down, all wear parts replaced, pre-dispatch inspection, warranty of up to 24 months, pay in up to 10 instalments, delivery throughout France and the European Union.

FAQ — DSG Gearbox
Can an oil change save my DSG?
On a neglected wet-clutch DSG6, an oil change using the correct specific fluid can make a noticeable difference to behaviour. However, it will not revive worn clutches or a mechanically damaged unit — if symptoms persist after an oil change and recalibration, the wear is internal.
Is the clutch kit included in the exchange?
Yes — that is what sets us apart: every DSG leaves with a brand-new dual-clutch kit. The mechatronic unit is not supplied: yours is reused, which avoids any pairing issues.
How much does a reconditioned DSG cost?
Price ranges by brand are set out in our pricing guide; the exact price for each reference is shown on its product page. The full exchange process (deposit, delivery, fitting) is explained in our dedicated guide.
