F1AE or F1AG: why do two families of 2.3 Multijet blocks coexist on the Ducato?

The 2.3 Multijet in the Fiat Ducato is not a single block. Over the 2006–2021 period, two engine code families succeeded and overlapped one another: the F1AE (F1AE0481D, F1AE0481N, F1AE3481B, F1AE3481D) and the F1AG / F1AF (F1AGL411B, F1AGL411C, F1AGL411D, F1AGL411J, F1AGL411M, F1AFL411B, F1AFL411C). Both families share the same engine capacity of 2286 cm³ but differ structurally: the cylinder head, block casing and injection geometry are not identical from one generation to the next. Using the label "2.3 Multijet" alone, without the engine code, to identify the part is a common mistake that leads to ordering an incompatible block.

Key points to watch on this 2.3 in the Ducato

The first-generation F1AE units (from 2006 onwards) are known for EGR valve and turbo problems accelerated by intensive urban use, which is very common in van or motorhome versions. The F1AG, introduced from around 2011, features a revised architecture with power outputs of up to 180 hp; it incorporates a new-generation Common Rail injection system that is more sensitive to fuel quality. The engine code appears on the block itself and in the vehicle registration document under field P.5: it is the only reliable identification criterion for selecting the correct bare engine from the thirteen references available in this collection.
