From 2006 to 2021, the 2.3 Multijet was paired with a 5-speed manual in its early years, then with a 6-speed manual as power outputs increased. The switch from one family to the other does not correspond strictly to a Ducato facelift year: it is the engine code stamped on the block that determines which gearbox was fitted at the factory. The four codes referenced here — F1AE0481D, F1AE0481N, F1AE3481D and F1AGL411D — are not all compatible with the same unit, and confusing them leads to an incorrect reference.

What the engine code reveals that the year alone cannot

The codes F1AE0481D and F1AE0481N correspond to the earliest variants of the 2.3 Multijet, paired with the 5-speed gearbox. The codes F1AE3481D and F1AGL411D belong to later phases, typically fitted with the 6-speed, with differences in transmissible torque. On the 2.3 Multijet, high mileage and the load cycles typical of light commercial vehicles place particular strain on the lower-gear synchromesh rings and the primary shaft bearings: these are the first points to check when diagnosing before replacement.
