Ducato 2.2 Multijet: 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox — and the year alone doesn't decide

Between 2006 and 2014, the Ducato's 2.2 Multijet engine was paired with two different manual gearbox formats — five-speed and six-speed — depending on the engine code and vehicle configuration. Engine codes 4HU and 4HV do not automatically receive the same gearbox casing, and getting this wrong at this stage means ordering an incompatible part. The exact reference stamped on the original gearbox is the essential starting point before taking any further steps.

When to opt for rebuilding your own unit rather than an exchange

For this engine, rebuilding the customer's own unit makes sense in two specific situations: when the gearbox in question is difficult to find in stock under the correct reference — which does occur with certain 5-speed variants of the 4HU — or when the casing or a structural component specific to that vehicle must be retained. In this case, the unit is reconditioned and returned to its owner, unlike the standard process where a reconditioned unit from stock is dispatched as a direct replacement. The two supply methods are not logistically interchangeable: a rebuild involves additional lead time due to the return journey of the unit.
