Two engine codes for the Ducato 3.0 Multijet: F1CE0481D and F1CE3481E do not take the same gearbox

This is the essential starting point for this engine: the engine code stamped on the block determines which gearbox was fitted as standard, and the two codes covered here — F1CE0481D and F1CE3481E — together cover the 2006–2021 period. Depending on the code found, the vehicle may be fitted with a 6-speed manual or a Comfort-Matic, the single-clutch automated manual gearbox developed for the Ducato. These two families are not interchangeable: the correct reference must always be determined from the engine code, not the vehicle's model year.

Manual and Comfort-Matic: two distinct failure patterns

The 6-speed manual paired with the 3.0 Multijet is a robust gearbox built for heavy loads, but the synchromesh on the lower ratios — 3rd and 4th in particular — are the first components to watch on high-mileage, heavily laden vehicles. The Comfort-Matic is an automated gearbox with an electro-hydraulic actuator: diagnosis must distinguish between an internal mechanical fault and an actuator failure. The gearbox is supplied without the actuator (robot unit); if this component has failed, it must be dealt with separately. For this engine, two supply options are available: exchange or customer unit rebuild, depending on the nature of the fault and the condition of the removed gearbox.
