Three gearbox families for a single CAYC engine code: what this means when making your choice

On the Altea 1.6 TDI produced between 2009 and 2015, the engine code is unique — CAYC — yet this engine was paired with three distinct gearbox families: a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed DSG and a 7-speed DSG. It is therefore not the engine that guides your choice, but the original gearbox fitted to your vehicle. The exact reference of the part to be replaced is everything.

DSG 6 or DSG 7: two architectures, two references

The DSG 6 and the DSG 7 are not variants of a common base unit: their ratios, mechatronic units and dimensions all differ. Both are supplied with a new dual clutch and without the mechatronic unit. Checking the original gearbox reference — visible on a plate or stamp on the casing — is essential before placing any order.

When reconditioning your own unit makes more sense

For DSG gearboxes in particular — where certain references are becoming scarce on the second-hand market — sending your own gearbox for reconditioning can be the more practical option: the original unit is retained, and the vehicle-specific tolerances and adaptations are preserved. This also applies where the gearbox shows localised wear but the main casing and differential housing remain sound. The 5-speed manual, being more common, is generally available on a direct exchange basis with no significant wait.
