The Ibiza's gearbox changed technical family three times between 2002 and 2021

Twenty years of production, four commercial generations and more than thirty engine codes on record: the Ibiza did not follow a straightforward path when it comes to transmission. In 2002, the catalogue opened with naturally aspirated petrol units (AZQ, BME, BXW on the 1.2, BKY on the 1.4) and 1.4 TDI and 1.9 TDI diesels, all paired with 5-speed manuals. The 1.9 TDI 130 hp (ASZ) was the exception from the outset: it came with a 6-speed manual, the only way to handle its torque. This is the first key distinction to bear in mind during identification.

The TSI / DSG shift from 2010 onwards

The fourth generation (2008–2017) introduced direct-injection TSI units and, with them, the DSG 7 dual-clutch gearbox. The 1.4 TSI (codes CAVE, CTHE, CTJC) and the 1.6 in certain versions received this automated manual gearbox; the other petrol and diesel engines in the same generation retained the 5-speed manual. Within a single model year, two radically different gearbox architectures could therefore coexist depending on the engine chosen. The DSG 7 is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch included.

Fifth generation: engine codes that must be checked

From 2017, the Ibiza V adopted 1.0 TSI (CHYB, CHZB, CHZL, DAJA) and 1.2 TSI (CGPA, CGPB) units, which could be fitted with either a 5- or 6-speed manual depending on power output and market. The 2.0 TDI (DKL, DKR) found on the sporting versions of this period was invariably paired with a 6-speed. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable criterion for distinguishing between variants: a single 1.2-litre engine capacity alone covers gearboxes that are incompatible across generations.
