Skoda Octavia diesel and petrol engines share well-documented weaknesses that vary according to the engine code

On the Octavia, covering the 1997 to 2020 period, engine failures follow recurring patterns depending on the engine family. On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI (codes AJQ, AQA, AUM, AUQ) has a reputation for being mechanically sound but is prone to oil passage blockages in the cylinder head at high mileage. The 2.0 TDI first generation (codes BPY, AXX, BMM) suffers from a well-known cylinder head weakness and timing chain issues; typical symptoms include knocking on cold starts, oil leaks around the cylinder head, and a gradual loss of power.

On the petrol side: TSI and naturally aspirated units — very different stories

The TSI units — 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI — all share a tendency towards excessive oil consumption linked to the piston rings, particularly pronounced on early versions of codes CBDA, CBDB, CAWB. The 1.8 TSI (code CUPA, CUNA) also exhibits cylinder head cracking on units that have been subjected to thermal stress. The naturally aspirated 1.6 (codes AVQ, BGU, BSE, BSF) is considerably more robust but can show premature valve guide wear at high mileage. The more recent 2.0 TSI (codes CHHB, CHHA, CCZA) has an improved reliability profile but remains susceptible to oil supply issues at low revs.

The engine code — the only reliable reference for replacement

A single engine capacity can cover up to four or five distinct engine codes across the 1997–2020 period, with internal architectures that are incompatible with one another. The 2.0 TDI is the clearest example: codes BMM and BPY are not interchangeable — neither with each other nor with a CBDB or a CRKB. The code is stamped directly on the block; it is the sole factor that determines which reconditioned unit is compatible. All engines listed here are bare engines.
