Which turbo for a Fiat Ducato diesel: 2.3 Multijet, 2.8 or 3.0 – how to make sure you get the right reference?

The Ducato spans several decades of production with three diesel engine capacity families — 2.0, 2.3, 2.8/3.0 — and power outputs that can vary by a factor of two within the same capacity: the manufacturer's turbo reference changes at every power level, and sometimes even within the same engine code depending on the generation. Selecting the correct reference therefore requires cross-referencing the engine capacity, the exact engine code and the power output — not just the commercial designation.

2.3 Multijet: the most fragmented family

It is with the 2.3 Multijet that the greatest care is needed. Engine codes F1AE, F1AGL and F1CE coexist on this block depending on the generation, and power outputs range from 111 to 177 hp. A 130 hp F1AE0481D and a 131 hp F1AE3481D do not take the same turbo; nor do a 148 hp and a 173 hp version. Cross-references are numerous — for example, the 130/131 hp versions use references 49135-05050 or 500314776, whilst the high-power versions (173–177 hp, codes F1AGL411) correspond to different maps. Only the 2.3 Multijet 111 to 131 hp versions are available as reconditioned turbos; the other engines in the catalogue are supplied as new turbos.

2.8 TD / TDI / JTD and 3.0 Multijet: older generations, fixed-geometry turbos

The 2.8 TD, TDI and iDTD (codes 8140.43, 8140.43S) as well as the 2.8 JTD are fitted with fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate, identifiable in particular by the 454061 series, which comes in numerous sub-references. The 3.0 Multijet / 3.0 HDi (codes 4H03, 4HG, 4HH, 4HJ) and the 2.2 HDi (S9W 700, S9W 702) are blocks from the Fiat-PSA co-production: their references combine Fiat numbers and PSA numbers — for example 1616838080 or 9802446680 — which explains why the same physical part can appear under two different manufacturer references depending on the source.

Failure causes to diagnose before replacement

The Ducato is frequently used under heavy load and on short cycles — two conditions that rapidly degrade oil quality and promote the build-up of deposits in the turbo's lubrication passages. The classic symptoms — a high-pitched whine, blue or black smoke, loss of power — are not sufficient on their own to distinguish a turbo failure from a fuel supply issue, a blocked DPF or a clogged EGR. Fitting a new turbo without identifying and correcting the root cause will lead to another rapid failure: inspection of the oil circuit, flow and pressure at the turbo inlet, and a check of the air circuit are all essential before any replacement is carried out.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Fiat Ducato Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Fiat Ducato Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
