From the 1.9 TDI to the 2.0 TDI 190: which new turbo does your Touran need, depending on the engine?

The answer largely depends on the engine code stamped on your block: the Touran went through several generations of diesel engines, and each family of codes corresponds to a distinct manufacturer reference. All the turbos listed here are new, sold as a straight sale with no old unit to return.

Four engine families, four reference families

The 1.9 TDI 90, 100 and 105 hp (codes BKC, BLS, BRU, BXE, BXF, BXJ) fitted the earliest versions of the Touran; their variable-geometry turbos are different from those of the 2.0 TDI engines that followed. The 2.0 TDI 136/140 hp (AZV, BKD, BKP, BMA, BVE) introduced a larger-capacity block with its own references — notably the 03G253xxx. The 2.0 TDI 170/177 hp (CFFA, CFFB, CFGB, CLLA, CLLB, DLUB) uses a different map and carries 03L253xxx or 785448 references. Finally, the 2.0 TDI 190 hp (CNHA, CZJA, DDAA, DDDA, DESA, DETA, DFCA, DFHA) covers the most recent blocks in the range, with 04L253xxx references. Two different codes can share the same quoted power output: always check the engine code before placing an order.

Identifying the root cause before replacement

On the Touran's TDI engines, turbo failures are frequently caused by degraded oil or a blocked EGR/DPF circuit contaminating the lubrication system. A variable-geometry turbo can also seize on its bearings or show wear on the actuator. Common symptoms include: progressive power loss, a sharp whistling noise under acceleration, blue or black smoke, and the vehicle entering limp-home mode. Addressing the root cause before fitting is essential: fresh oil and filter, inspection of the oil feed pipe, and a check of the intake circuit. A new turbo fitted to an unclean system will not last.
