Which turbo for the Volkswagen Sharan, by generation and engine code?

The Sharan spanned two generations with very different powertrains. The first generation already featured several 1.9 TDI turbodiesels and a 1.8 T petrol, while the second introduced the 2.0 TDI in its most powerful variants. In practice, this means turbos are incompatible across generations — and even across power outputs at the same engine capacity: the 1.9 TDI comes in three versions here (90 hp, 115 hp, 130–150 hp), none of which share the same turbo.

1.9 TDI and 1.8 T: multiple families, multiple references

On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI 90 hp (code ANU) is the only engine in its generation available solely as a reconditioned turbo. The 1.9 TDI 115 hp (codes AUY, BVK) and the 1.9 TDI 130–150 hp (codes ASZ, BTB) each take a distinct new turbo: mixing up these references when ordering is a common mistake — the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to identify the correct unit. On the petrol side, the 1.8 T 20V 150 hp (codes AJH, AWC) is the only petrol engine in the range; it is available as either a new or reconditioned turbo, making it the most flexible option in terms of choice.

2.0 TDI 170 and 177 hp: variable geometry and lubrication vigilance

The 2.0 TDI 170 and 177 hp (codes CBBB, CFFA, CFFB, CFGB, CFGC, CLLA) are fitted exclusively to the second-generation Sharan. These engines use variable-geometry turbos that are particularly sensitive to oil quality and the condition of the lubrication circuit. Before fitting any replacement turbo, it is essential to identify and address the root cause of the original failure — whether that is sludge build-up, degraded oil, or a foreign body — otherwise the new unit will suffer the same damage. Typical symptoms on these engines include a gradual loss of power, an unusual whistling noise, or persistent exhaust smoke.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen Sharan Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen Sharan Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
