27 engine codes on the Transporter: all turbos are new, but the right one depends on the exact block

On the Transporter, the diesel range spans from the 1.6 TD with engine code JX through to the 2.0 BiTDI and 2.5 TDI in their many power variants. All the turbos listed here are new parts, sold as a straightforward purchase with no old unit to return. There are no reconditioned turbos in this collection: having your own unit rebuilt is therefore not an option within this range.

Why engine capacity and power output alone are not enough to identify the right turbo

The 2.5 TDI perfectly illustrates how complex identification can be: seven engine codes cover the 88, 90, 100 and 102 hp variants (ACV, AJT, ALX, AUF, AXL, AYC, AYY), whilst the 130, 163 and 174 hp versions use codes AXE, BLJ, BPC, and the 151 hp version uses codes AHY, AXG. The same 2.5 TDI 130 hp can correspond to either engine code AXD or engine code BNZ: two codes, two different turbos. On the 2.0 TDI, codes CAAA, CAAB, CAAC cover some versions, but the 150 hp can also carry codes CXFA, CXHA or CXGB, and the BiTDI 180 hp the code CFCA. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable starting point.

Common causes of turbo failure on a van used for heavy-duty work

The Transporter is frequently used under heavy load and on short urban runs — two conditions that accelerate the build-up of sludge in the oil circuit and degrade bearing lubrication. On the 2.5 TDI in particular, degraded oil or a partially blocked diesel particulate filter can cause exhaust gas pressure to rise, weakening the turbo's seals and bearings. Before any replacement, it is essential to address the root cause of the failure — oil quality, intake hose integrity, DPF condition — otherwise the new turbo will be exposed to exactly the same stresses.
