The Polo is a city car whose engine is constantly under strain – and the turbo pays the price

Heavy urban use, repeated cold starts, engine speeds that rarely settle: the typical Polo driving profile creates harsh conditions for the turbo. The oil never reaches operating temperature before the driver switches off, the bearings run dry for a few seconds on start-up, and carbon build-up in the intake circuit sets in gradually. On diesel units such as the 1.4 TDI (engine codes AMF, BMS, BNM, BNV, BWB) and the 1.9 TDI (AGR, AFN, ATD, BAY, BHC, BLS, BXE), this short-trip cycle accelerates bearing wear and encourages carbon deposits on the turbine side. On the petrol 1.0 TSI (CHZL, CHZJ, DKJA, DKLA) and 1.4 TSI (CZEA, CUSA, CUSB, CYZB), the fixed geometry and high oil pressures at cruising speed make the CHRA particularly sensitive to lubrication quality and freshness.

The same 1.4 or 1.9, but several different turbos: identification by engine code is essential

The range of power outputs — 1.4 TDI from 70 to 105 hp, 1.9 TDI from 90 to 110 hp, 1.2 TDI 75 hp (CAYB), 1.6 TDI 90 hp (CFWA), 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC, CHPA) — means different turbo references exist even for the same engine capacity. A 1.4 TDI 75 hp with engine code AMF does not take the same turbo as a 1.4 TDI 90 hp with engine code BNV, and the manufacturer references (045145701, 045253019G, 733783-5008S, 454159-5002S…) are not interchangeable between versions. The power output shown on the registration document is not enough: only the engine code stamped on the block allows you to match the correct reference.

New or reconditioned turbo depending on the engine, and why the root cause of failure must be addressed first

All engines listed on this page are covered by new turbos, with the exception of the 1.4 TDI 75, 90 and 105 hp, for which a reconditioned turbo is available on an exchange basis. New turbos are sold outright, with no old unit to return. Before fitting any turbo, identifying the root cause of the failure is essential: a foreign body drawn into the intake, a faulty oil hose seal, a blocked filter or a clogged EGR will destroy a new turbo just as quickly as the old one. Persistent whistling, white or greyish smoke under acceleration, and unexplained drops in engine speed are warning signs that must not be ignored on a Polo used heavily in urban conditions.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen Polo Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen Polo Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
