Petrol and diesel Golf turbos: two different failure patterns, two different replacement requirements

On the Golf, diesel and petrol turbos don't fail for the same reasons, and that difference directly determines which replacement part to choose. On the diesel side — 1.9 TDI, 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TDI — variable geometry is the first suspect: the turbine vanes gradually clog up due to a blocked particulate filter or a faulty EGR recirculation system, until airflow regulation is completely lost. The classic symptom is a gradual loss of power accompanied by limp-home mode, sometimes with no visible smoke on start-up. On the petrol side — 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.8 T, 2.0 TFSI, 2.0 TSI — failure more often stems from inadequate lubrication: degraded oil, overdue oil changes, or a worn turbo seal causing an oil leak into the intake. In both cases, fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause will invariably lead to another failure.

Identifying the correct turbo by engine type and engine code

The Golf spans several generations and a wide range of power outputs: the 1.9 TDI alone runs from 90 hp to 150 hp, with engine codes as varied as AGR, ALH, AFN, AJM, AUY, ASZ, ARL, BKC, BLS, BRU, BXE, BXF, BXJ, each corresponding to a different turbo. On the 2.0 TDI, the range runs from 110 hp to 184 hp (GTD), with specific codes for each power output: CBAB, CFFB, CJAA for the 110 and 140 hp versions, CBBB, CFGB for the 170 hp versions, and CUNA, CUPA, CUWA, CYLA, DFMA, DFUA, DGCA, DJGA for the GTD 184 hp. On the petrol engines, the 1.4 TSI is a good illustration of the pitfall: codes BLG, BMY, BWK, CAVA (140–170 hp) do not share the same turbo as codes CZDA, CZEA (150 hp, next generation), nor as CAXA (122 hp). The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference to avoid any ordering error.

New and reconditioned turbos: what this collection offers

The vast majority of Golf turbos available here are new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase with no old unit to return. Two engines are the exception: the 1.9 TDI 90–105 hp (codes BKC, BLS, BRU, BXE, BXF, BXJ) and the 1.8 T 180 hp (codes APP, ARZ, AUQ) are offered as reconditioned turbos. For the Golf R and its codes CJXB, CJXC, CJXG, DJHA (300 and 310 hp), the fixed-geometry IS38 turbo is available new — a component subjected to significantly higher thermal and pressure stresses than any other engine in the range, making oil quality and adherence to service intervals particularly critical.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen Golf Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen Golf Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
