New Beetle turbo: two engine families, eighteen engine codes, two generations of turbine

The New Beetle was offered throughout its production life with two distinct turbocharged engine architectures. On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI units come in the following engine codes:ALH, ATD, AHF, AJM, ASV, AUY, AXR, AGR, BVK, BEW, BRM— a range of codes reflecting cylinder head revisions as well as changes to injection systems and emissions management. On the petrol side, the 1.8 T and 1.8 TSI units carry the codesAUM, AWU, AWV, BKF, AWP, CPRA, CPKA. The same power output designation (1.9 TDI 90, for example) can therefore correspond to several engine codes whose turbos are not interchangeable with one another: only the code stamped on the block is definitive.

1.9 TDI: variable geometry, causes of failure and accurate identification

The turbos fitted to 1.9 TDI New Beetle engines are all of thevariable geometry(VNT) type. The actuator controls the movable vanes in the nozzle ring; gradual fouling of these vanes — often caused by degraded oil or a clogged EGR circuit — leads to erratic behaviour: whistling under acceleration, loss of boost, and activation of the engine protection mode. On these engines, the manufacturer's reference (e.g.038253019C, 038253019N, 03G253016L, 03G253016Ndepending on the engine code) determines the CHRA and the volute size; confusing two closely related references — same stated power output, different engine code — results in a turbo that is mismatched to the block's airflow requirements. Checking the root cause of the original failure (oil quality and pressure, intake hose integrity) is essential before refitting.

1.8 T and 1.8 TSI: wastegate and differences between codes AWP, BKF, CPRA

The 1.8 T petrol engines in the New Beetle use turbos with afixed geometry and wastegate. The codesAWP, AWU, AWV, AUMshare a similar architecture but have distinct turbine references (e.g.06A145702P, 06A145713B, 06A145713F, 06A145713L, 06A145713M). The 1.8 TSI (codesCPRA, CPKA) is a later generation using references from the06K145701 / 06K145721 / 06K145722family: these parts are not compatible with the earlier 1.8 T units. Across all these petrol engines, symptoms of a failing turbo include persistent blue smoke when cold (worn bearing seals) or a high-pitched whistle under full load (foreign body or bearing wear). The1.8 Tis available as a reconditioned turbo; the other engines are offered with a new turbo, with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
