11 engine variants, 4 gearbox families: what daily use of the A3 demands from the transmission

The Audi A3 is above all a versatile compact, bought and used as such: repeated commutes, heavy urban driving, and sometimes weekly motorway miles. This usage profile puts different demands on the transmission compared with an SUV or a van, but it is no less demanding: frequent clutch engagement in town, low-speed gear changes, and repeated heat cycles on DSG units in slow-moving traffic. Between 1996 and 2024, the A3 has covered 11 distinct engine variants — from the naturally aspirated 1.6 petrol to the 3.2 units, taking in the full TDI and TFSI range — spread across four gearbox types: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7.

Diesel or petrol: transmissions that don't mix

On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI (9 engine codes: AGR, AHF, ALH, ASV, ATD, AXR, BKC, BLS, BXE) is paired exclusively with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes depending on the generation. The 1.6 TDI (CAYC, CLHA, CRKB) can be fitted with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7. The 2.0 TDI is the most widely represented engine in the range, with 11 engine codes (AZV, BKD, BMM, BMN, CBAB, CBBB, CFFB, CFGB, CLHA, CRBC, CRFC) and three possible gearbox families: 6-speed manual, DSG 6 or DSG 7 — the engine code and vehicle generation determine which applies.

On the petrol side, the naturally aspirated 1.6 units (BGU, BSE, BSF) are limited to 5- and 6-speed manuals. The TFSI engines introduce DSG gearboxes: the 1.4 TFSI (CAXC, CMBA, CXSA) and the 1.8 TFSI (BYT, CDAA, CJSA) are available with either a 6-speed manual or a DSG 7 depending on the year. The 2.0 TFSI (AXX, BWA, CCZA, CCZB) can be fitted with a DSG 6, a DSG 7 or a 6-speed manual. The 3.2 TFSI (BDB, BMJ, BUB) is paired exclusively with the DSG 6, whilst the naturally aspirated 3.2 shares the same codes but receives a 6-speed manual.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: a technical point not to be overlooked

The DSG gearboxes listed on this page are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch. This distinction is key for diagnosis: a symptom such as harsh gear changes or slipping in town can stem from the mechatronic unit just as much as from the mechanical gearbox itself — two separate components whose faults should not be confused. On high-mileage urban A3s, the DSG 6 units fitted to the 2.0 TFSI and 3.2 TFSI have a known tendency to overheat in slow traffic, which accelerates clutch wear. Identifying the exact engine code is always the first step before searching for a reference.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Audi model in stock?

We currently list 131 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Audi?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Audi?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
